We return home for the first episode of our second season, celebrating our one year anniversary after spending the last week on the road with Super DIRT Week. We welcome Brett Hearn, the winner of the VP Small Engine Fuels 200 to the show, along with third-place finisher Jimmy Phelp and finish up with a chat with Danny Tyler, the narrow winner of Brett Deyo’s Short Track Super Nationals.

This week, we chat with first-time guest Frank ‘Bubba’ Burnell. We’ll also check in with Jeff Hachmann of DIRTcar.

We dive into a diverse mailbag, talk about Rich’s upcoming Sportsman endeavors and the wonders of Steak-flavored Great Value brand Potato Chips.

The mailbag prompts a spirited discussion between Rich and John on safety, and then age of kids allowed in the pit area.

At Grandview, Duane Howard flipped in his heat race, and started 27th. He rallied to finish 2nd, and wrapped up the track title and the American Racer Cup, his second in three seasons.

Sept 10 at 11:30 am, the DIRTcar Modifieds will parade through Syracuse, starting at Destiny USA as prep for Super DIRT Week.

Rich Post, returning to the studio after a summer of soccer, John Baumes and Chris Marquart welcome Bobby Varin back to the 31st Lap again, and then chat with legendary Joe Plazek, driver of the Maple Leaf No. 1. Jeff Hachmann of DIRTcar NorthEast stops in to pump Super DIRT Week, and Daryl Barrett acts as our field reporter at the Spalding Foundation’s Challenge of Champions II at the Seneca Grand Prix in Watkins Glen, featuring Allen Bestwick, Jeff Green, and Erik Darnell. He won his heat race, and then we lost track of him!

Thoughts go out to Randy Adams, a derby driver in Pennsylvania. Adams’ father was seriously injured when a fuel cell exploded on a truck they were preparing to run Saturday night. Pete is doing well following a series of surgeries, but doctors are continuing to caution everyone. This week, we welcome Betty Sherwood of the Spaulding Foundation for Injured Drivers to the 31st Lap to talk a little bit about the plight of race drivers and what lies ahead for them if injured. Beth also talks about an upcoming fundraiser regarding for the Spaulding Foundation in Watkins Glen.

Mike Payne drops in by phone to talk about the season as owner of the successful No. 27J driven by Danny Johnson on the DIRTcar Circuit and at Canandaigua Motorsports Park.

We also catch up with Jamie St. Mary, a member of the reknown PowerTeam in northern NY as he prepares for the upcoming Franklin County Fair in Malone, NY. There will be a full-size derby up there on Saturday August 4.

The Spalding Foundation will host the Celebrity Challenge race at Seneca Grand Prix Carts next Thursday Night, featuring Alan Bestwick and Jeff Green and Eric Darnell. Be sure to visit spaldingfoundation.org for details
